Union Steward is the title of an official position within the organizational labor union. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that rank-and-file members of the union hold this position voluntarily while maintaining their role as an employee of the Company. The steward position can be filled through democratic election or by appointment.
A steward becomes thoroughly familiar with the provisions of your collective bargaining agreement to ensure both the Company and worker are not violating its terms.
The steward becomes a significant link of information between the union leadership, the Company and its crewmembers. A conduit for filing grievances about disputes over contract interpretation or discipline; a steward's duty is to provide advice, represent and assist their fellow crewmembers when they face disciplinary action or contract violations occur.
What can crewmembers expect of a steward? Crewmembers can expect stewards to:
· LISTEN to your concerns.
· INVESTIGATE your concerns, be they grievances or other union matters.
· INVOLVE you in the investigation process.
· COMMUNICATE information on union programs, services and contract benefits.
· RELAY worker concerns and opinions to union leadership.
· REPRESENT and defend fellow workers through the grievance process.
· POPULARIZE and promote union consciousness and values in the workplace.
